H. pylori, stomach ulcers, and cancer

Helicobacter pylori, also called H. pylori, is a bacterial infection of the stomach. This is a very common infection and may in fact up to 4 billion people across the world. It is unclear exactly how this bacteria is read, but it may be linked with contaminated food, water, or other environmental services.

This bacteria is able to survive the stomach despite very high acid levels. It grows on the inside of the stomach wall and causes ulcers and stomach cancer.

There is a blood test, breath test, and stool test available to test for H. pylori. This can be ordered by your family doctor or a specialist. The only way to eliminate this infection is with strong antibiotics and medications to reduce the acid content in the stomach. Treatment will be continued for several weeks and may need to be repeated in the future.

It is not clear if this infection is contagious to family members, friends, or coworkers. It is recommended to wash hands frequently, prepare your own meals properly whenever possible, and avoid contaminated drinking sources.
